How to mold a mouth guard?

Note: the method outlined in this article is guaranteed to be suitable for Ultimatum Boxing UMG mouthguards. We cannot claim that these recommendations will help you successfully mold other manufacturers' mouth guards, especially if they are made from other materials or combinations of materials.

1. Prepare a container of boiling water, a container of cold water, and a spoon/ladle for removing the mouthguard from the boiling water.
2. Place the mouthguard in boiling water for 30 seconds. Under the influence of temperature, the material of the mouth guard will become plastic and the shape will begin to change. That's how it should be.
3. Remove the mouthguard from the boiling water with a spoon or ladle and place it in cold water for literally 2 seconds to cool the surface and prevent burns.
4. Without wasting time, remove the mouth guard from the cold water with your hands and begin molding.

Molding is the most important step, take it seriously. A properly molded mouthguard will fit tightly, provide good protection and last a long time. If unsuccessful, steps 2-4 can be repeated after complete cooling, but it is better to do everything the first time. Good luck!

As the mouthguard material cools, it will lose its plasticity, so you won’t have time to look at the instructions. Seconds will count.

Place the mouthguard on your upper teeth so that the groove is strictly in the center.

At the same time, with the index and middle fingers of both hands, press the mouth guard to the teeth and gums in front, moving across the entire front area of the mouth guard, and with your thumbs, press the mouth guard to the upper teeth, gums and palate from the inside. Help yourself with your tongue. The tighter you form the mouthguard, the more benefits it will provide. You have literally a few seconds to do everything, don’t delay. Forming movements with your fingers should be just forming movements; do not try to flatten or stretch the mouthguard. Simply press it against your teeth and gums from the outside and inside, avoiding thinning of the material in the areas of pressure.

Close your mouth, close your lips and use suction to create a vacuum in the oral cavity. This will increase the molding density. Under no circumstances bite the mouth guard too hard, as you will simply bite through it before the material hardens. Simply bite down on it to indicate the location of the lower teeth in your natural bite. At this stage, you can continue to shape the mouthguard by massaging your fingers through the upper lip from the outside and with your tongue from the inside.

Take your time to remove the mouthguard from your mouth. Allow the material to cool and lose its plasticity while continuing to create a vacuum in the oral cavity. After 2 minutes, carefully remove the tray and place it in cold water to fix it. 10 minutes in cold water will be more than enough. Your mouthguard is ready, use it!
